First-time domestic helpers in Singapore are required to attend the Settling-in Programme (SIP). Employers will be informed of this requirement in the Work Permit in-principle approval (IPA) letter.

Answer: To hire a helper in Singapore, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Be 21 years old or older.
2. Not be an undischarged bankrupt.
3. Have the mental capacity to fully understand and fulfill your responsibilities as an employer.
4. Your caregiving needs (e.g., caring for young children or elderly family members) and financial ability to hire, maintain, and provide suitable accommodation for the helper will also be considered.


 

5. ​Under what circumstances will an employer be discharged from the security bond liability in Singapore, and what are the key conditions that need to be met for this discharge to occur?

Answer: An employer in Singapore will be discharged from the security bond liability under the following conditions:
1. The employer has canceled the Work Permit.
2. The domestic helper has returned to their home country.
3. The employer has not breached any of the security bond conditions.
If all of these conditions are met, the security bond will typically be discharged approximately one week after the domestic helper has left Singapore. The employer will receive a notification by post when the security bond is discharged

 

 

6. What are the insurance requirements for migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Singapore, and who is responsible for purchasing these insurance policies?

 For migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Singapore, employers are required to purchase both medical insurance (MI) and personal accident insurance before the helper's arrival in Singapore. Employers are responsible for buying these insurance policies as part of their medical obligations to the MDW. It's important to note that the cost of purchasing these insurance policies cannot be passed on to the helper.

 

 

7. Which 6ME results must be submitted to MOM?

All 6ME (Six-Monthly Medical Examination) results for foreign domestic workers (FDWs) must be submitted to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Singapore. This includes the results of tests for pregnancy, syphilis, and tuberculosis, among others. Regardless of the specific tests that helpers need to undergo, all 6ME results must be submitted to MOM to ensure compliance with the regulations governing FDWs in Singapore.

 

8. How do I check an MDW's employment history?

You can check the employment record of a prospective migrant domestic worker (MDW) by logging in to our FDW eService with your Singpass.

You will need the MDW’s details to access her record:

(i) Name or FIN
(ii) Nationality/Citizenship
(iii) Date of birth
 


9. What is the maximum number of years an MDW can work for the same employer?

There is no maximum number of years a migrant domestic worker (MDW) can work for the same employer. However, the maximum age that the MDW can work in Singapore is generally 60 years old.
 


10. How do I apply for a second MDW?
You are eligible to hire a second migrant domestic worker (MDW) if you have any of these family members living with you:

At least 2 children below 18 years old.
A parent or parent-in-law over 60 years old.
You also need to provide sufficient privacy and sleeping space in the house for the 2 MDWs.

To apply for the second MDW, submit a Work Permit application and provide the relevant information:

A copy of the children's birth certificates.
A copy of the parent's or parent-in-law's identity cards and the employer's or spouse's birth certificate.
Each household can hire up to 2 MDWs.
